Meta tags are an important aspect of SEO, but many web writers, who don’t use code, do not really understand what meta tags are. As internet marketer Kate Morris explains, meta tags “provide information about the webpage in the HTML of the document. This information is called ‘metadata’ and while it is not displayed on the page itself, it can be read by search engines and web crawlers.” Search engines can essentially interpret this data, which aids in ranking, selecting content for snippets, and more. There are multiple types, including meta charset and meta robots; however, we focus on just two, which are the most common for web writers to engage with:
